Welcome at Lach Mhara
At Lach Mhara whether you arrive by air or ferry, drive or cycle you will find a welcome. We can accomodate 4 guests in one double and one twin bedded room.
Our home is situated on Kilnaughton Bay along a farm track leading to the square lighthouse of Carraig Fhada, an Islay landmark. The house is in a peaceful and remote location but is only 3 miles from Port Ellen and the ferry terminal and 6 miles from 3 of Islay’s iconic Malt Whisky Distilleries.
From the house a short walk over a small headland, where wild plants and flowers change with the seasons, brings you to Singing Sands, one of the gems of Islay. You may see feral goats, Roe deer or Highland Cattle on the way.
We are particularly well placed for exploration of the Oa for those who wish to enjoy the rugged coastal scenery and exceptional birds and wildlife of this special island however nowhere is far away on Islay so the whole island is open for your enjoyment. A different beach, stretch of coastline, distillery, coffee shop or piece of the island’s heritage can be visited each day of your stay.
If you prefer to relax close to Lach Mhara you may spot seals watching you or even an otter catching crabs in the kelp. Occasionally Dolphins visit the bay and can be seen feeding and leaping out of the water. In the summer Terns and Gannets dive close in to the house whilst winter birds include Divers and Mergansers. We have our own beach in front of the house which with others along the adjacent foreshore are ideal for swimming, playing on the sands and skimming stones or you may wish to explore the bay and coast by kayak. There is a walkway to the lighthouse, a place of solitude, with rocky promontory from which to fish.
Nights are peaceful with the sound of the sea lapping on to the beach.
